Avalon is village within the realm of King Ethelred’s kingdom that appears in the Ruby-Spears Dragon's Lair animated series episode "The Pool of Youth." The citizens of Avalon are governed by Mayor Rukh.
The evil old witch Biralla oppressed the people of Avalon in search of the location of the magical "Pool of Youth" in hopes of strengthening her dwindling magical abilities through regaining her youth. Seeking to coerce its location out of Mayor Rukh’s daughter Gelda, Biralla troubled the town of Avalon by turning all of its villagers into stone. After Gelda refused her demand, Biralla put a sleeping spell upon the girl and instructed her canine henchmen Shadmocks to imprison Gelda in a "chamber of sleep." On the road toward Avalon, Princess Daphne encountered Rukh, partially frozen in stone, and so learned of Biralla's wicked plan.
After Dirk the Daring defeated Biralla with help from the Sandman, the witch’s enchantment spells were broken, returning Avalon’s population to normal. Timothy surprised the villagers with the gift of Biralla, still frozen as a frog statue. A grateful Gelda invited Timothy to stay as Avalon’s personal knight, but Dirk insisted the squire return with him to learn how to become a knight, and Daphne promised to send him to visit.
Trivia[]
- Though obviously inspired by Arthurian legends, the village has no obvious similarities to the mythical island of Avalon. Ethelred’s Avalon appears to be geographically inland.
