Bats are enemy creatures that appear in almost every game in the Dragon's Lair series.
In some games, particularly large Bats function as stage bosses, most notably The Bat King who appears briefly in the original game and features more prominently in Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair.
Appearances[]
Dragon's Lair (game)Dragon's Lair[]
Bats appear in two rooms of The Castle. They swarm Dirk as he attempts to cross the crumbling Catwalk. They also pester Dirk as he attempts to descent a spiral stone staircase, while the large Bat King waits for him in a door at the bottom of the stairwell.
Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp[]
Giant bats appear in Stage 6 (Ancient Egypt), attempting to eat Dirk and carry away an apparently mummified Princess Daphne.
Dragon's Lair 3D[]
Although most Bats in the castle do not attack Dirk, the more aggressive variety attempt to bite Dirk for minimal HP damage. Among the lowest-tier threats in the game, they can be defeated with a single strike from Dirk’s Sword or an arrow.
The Bat King guards in the Dragon’s Wing Essence in The Bat King resides in a large belfry at the top of the Castle Towers, surrounded by many bells.
In Hollow’s flashback account of the Dragon Essences, the Bat King is shown to be one of six former servants of Mordroc who acquired an Essence after the banishment of their master to an alternate dimension prior to the events of the game.
TV Series[]
Bats and the Bat King (who wears a crown and medallion) appear as minor enemies in the Ruby-Spears animated series. In the episode “The Snow Witch”, the Bats chase after Dirk the Daring, Timothy, and Bertram while passing through Skull Forest seeking ancient ruins. Dirk is able to defeat each bat with a single blow, causing them to disappear in a bright flash.
Dragon's Lair (NES)[]
Bats appear sporadically in the game as low-level flying enemies who can reduce Dirk's life-bar upon contact but can be defeated with Dirk's projectile weapons.
Dragon's Lair (SNES)[]
Bats feature as low-level flying enemies in the game, but the giant Bat King is featured as a boss battle in one of the castle's towers.
Trivia[]
- In Cardsmiths' first wave of Dragon's Lair trading cards, the Bat King features on card #15 ("BATS IN THE BELFRY") with the description: "Fortunately, Dirk is neither cowardly nor superstitious, so he's able to duel the Bat King with courage and determination. And a very sharp sword."[1]
- AnJon's 2002 Mordroc action figure included two "Ding Bats" as accessories.
