The Black Dragon is the name of Mordroc's transformed state that features as the final boss of Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair.
When Dirk the Daring reaches Mordroc's lair to rescue Princess Daphne, the wizard transforms himself into a large black dragon as a last resort declaring it to be a display of his "true power." He attacks from the air by firing magical bolts and energy balls which Dirk must nullify and deflect with his sword. After being hit with his own deflected attacks, the Black Dragon falls to the ground and is vulnerable to Dirk's melee attacks while stunned. After being defeated, Mordroc reverts back to his normal state and is left defeated as Dirk and Daphne embrace.
Appearance[]
Similar in size to Singe the Dragon, the Black Dragon has a white belly, white fin, and white hair (similar to Mordroc's design), and he is usually in perpetual flight through use of his purple under-arm wings. The Black Dragon form has only four digits on each hand, whereas Mordroc's regular form has five digits.
Character Development History[]
Dragon's Lair: The Legend was an early working title for an unsuccessful attempt to adapt the franchise into a feature film, with story elements later adapted into a Game Boy title of the same name. In the film pitch, a teenaged Dirk seeks out a legendary Knight who is said to be the only one capable of defeating the evil horned-king sorcerer "Mordrock." In Dirk's quest to find the warrior, he overcomes various trials and finds the Knight to be a mysterious and tired former mercenary dwelling in a deserted castle. Promising to help Dirk for a price to be named later, he adorns Dirk in the iconic orange tunic and chain mail armor. The Knight battles Mordrock on a mountain but only succeeds in mortally wounding the possessed body of Dirk's friend Strun. As Mordrock's soul transforms into a large and terrifying dragon, the Knight charges Dirk with the task of slaying the beast then collapses into a heap of empty armor.[1] Dirk manages to defeat the dark dragon and rescue Daphne.[2]
Trivia[]
- In 2002, AnJon Toys released a wave of four action figures as a tie-in with Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair: Dirk the Daring, Princess Daphne, Mordroc, and Singe. A second wave of figures was planned, but the company's financial losses prevented the retail release of additional figures and resulted in the closure of the company. The Black Dragon was a candidate to become a deluxe figure of future waves, serving the a similar role that Singe's figure did in the initial wave.[3]
