Cinematronics Incorporated was an arcade game developer/publisher that primarily released vector graphics games in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including such hits as Space Wars, Rip Off, and Solar Quest.[1] While other companies released games based on raster displays, early in their history, Cinematronics and Atari, Inc. released vector-display games, which offered a distinctive look and a greater graphic capability (at the time), at the cost of being only black and white (initially). Cinematronics also published Dragon's Lair in 1983 for North America, the first major laserdisc video game. Following the game’s phenomenal success in arcades, Tim Campbell, the company’s director of marketing, touted the advanced laser disc technology as the future platform of the home entertainment industry, in spite of the marketplace struggles of video games in general.[2]
Cinematronics released Space Ace in 1984 with enhanced promotional kits to encourage a theatrical style presentation, but financial problems prevented it from releasing Bluth's other laser disc game projects into the floundering arcade market.
Cinematronics’ financial situation deteriorated after some bad decisions, and it filed bankruptcy proceedings under Chapter 11 hoping to reorganize and recover. Unfortunately their efforts failed, and the company was acquired by Tradewest in 1987 in an unfriendly take-over. The company was renamed The Leland Corporation, after one of Tradewest's co-founders Leland Cook. The arcade version of Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp was released under the Leland Corp. label in 1991.
