Creeps

Crypt Creeps are enemies which appear in the Dragon's Lair franchise, having debuted in the original Dragon's Lair arcade game.

Types of Creeps[]

Crypt Creeps may refer generally to all enemies that appear in the Mausoleum/Crypt Creeps scene of the original Dragon's Lair and specifically to the flying spectral skeletons. The flying skeleton Crypt Creeps await in a vault at the end of a corridor in the tombs where Dirk also has to deal with animated skulls, flesh-eating black goo and giant skeletal hands. (possibly belonging to the reanimated skeleton of a dragon).

The floating spectre Crypt Creeps are joined with:

  • The Bouncing Skulls/Chattering Skulls which also debuted in the same stage and could be considered variations on the Creeps. The Skulls return for Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp as enemies who reside near the skeletal remains of Singe the Dragon in his former Treasure Room.
  • The large Skeletal Hands (possibly belonging to the reanimated skeleton of a dragon).
  • Amorphous Black Goo which encompasses and devours Dirk if he stands in one place too long (the goo might possibly consist of a legion of countless bugs that operate together).

Other Appearances[]

The Crypt King[]

In Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair, the Dragon's Spirit Essence is guarded by The Crypt King, who acquired it after the banishment of Mordroc to an alternate dimension prior to the events of the game.

Dragon's Lair (TV series)[]

Crypt Creeps appear as minor enemies in the Dragon's Lair animated series episode “The Legend of the Giant's Name.” When Dirk makes a risky bargain with a giant to spend the night inside the Black Hill of Arddu, Cinge the Dragon sends his Giddy Goons to interfere with the knight. The Goons open a treasure chest, releasing several Crypt Creeps which begin to pester Dirk as he is trying to avoid the Black Goo covering the floor. Dirk escapes by convincing the Creeps to attack the Goons instead, and the enemies tumble into the Goo.

The design of the Crypt Creeps is substantially different from the games, abandoning the floating skeleton aesthetic and resembling winged imps.

Trivia[]

  • Along with a few other enemies, the Crypt Creeps had their name spelled out by a caption in the original game's intro.
  • The Creeps are actually encountered twice in the 1983 game, in two scenes that are horizontally mirrored versions of each other.
  • Marvel Books released a Dragon's Lair coloring/activity book titled Dirk the Daring Battles the Crypt Creeps in 1984, written by Suzanne Weyn and illustrated by Howard Post.
  • The Crypt Creeps stage is featured in Cardsmiths' Dragon's Lair trading card series as card #17 ("THE HALLWAY OF SKULLS"), with the description: "It's skullduggery at its most abundant as Dirk will need to defeat these decapitated das-tards in the dark of Mordroc's Castle lest he become the latest addition to the collection."[1]
