Dragon's Lair Trilogy is a video game compilation by Digital Leisure originally released in 2010 as an optical disc for the Wii, published by Destineer. It has been updated for several subsequent releases in digital and physical formats for: the PlayStation 3 (2013), the PlayStation 4 (2017), and the Switch and Xbox One (2019). It includes Dragon's Lair, Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp and Space Ace, thus retroactively making the latter - originally an unrelated Cinematronics game also animated by Don Bluth - one of the main entries in the Dragon's Lair series.
For the PC and PlayStation 3 platforms, "Dragon's Lair Trilogy" is offered as a bundle which allows the buyer to download any or all of the three games (as they can also be bought individually).
Gameplay Modes[]
The compilation offers several gameplay modes designed to be more user-friendly than the original arcade releases, some of which were carried over from earlier home version releases. All games offer the choice to enable or disable "Move Guides," which remove the guesswork from the controls. "Move Beeps" can also be enabled or disabled and the player's life counter can be set to three, five, or (exclusively to the Wii version) infinite.
For the original Dragon's Lair, players can choose Easy or Hard difficulties and select between "Home" and "Arcade" modes which affect scene order; "Home Mode" also offers access to animated scenes prepared for the Bluth Studio's original laserdisc that were omitted from the original arcade version. Space Ace offers three difficulty settings (Cadet, Captain, and Ace) which reduce the number of scenes and moves necessary to complete the game. Dragon's Lair: Time Warp offers the choice of "Original" and "Director's Cut" modes that determine the version of the game's final stage players will encounter.
The Wii version's high scores lists note the player's mode or difficulty settings for Dragon's Lair and Space Ace, a feature removed for later releases in favor of uniform high score lists. No scoring option is offered for Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp, a departure from The Leland Corporation's 1991 arcade release.
Special Features[]
All releases of the compilation feature the options to view the Attract Modes and Full Game Watch. Some versions have a storyboard sequence for Time Warp's unfinished Pirate Ship stage and video interviews with creators Bluth, Gary Goldman, and Rick Dyer.
Trivia[]
- A "Dragon's Lair Deluxe Pack", containing the same three games, was previously released by Digital Leisure on PC CD-ROM in 1999. It was followed by the 3-disc box set "Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary Special Edition" available on DVD-Video and CD-ROM, which added previously unreleased playable scenes and bonus features for the three titles.
- Physical versions of the collection have been published by Limited Run Games for the Playstation 4 and Switch.[1]
- The three games are offered exclusively as individual purchases on mobile platforms such as Apple iOS/iTunes and Google Play. The games were apparently de-listed in 2023 without notice or publicity but returned to active listings in 2024.
