- "To slay the dragon, use the magic sword!"
- —Princess Daphne, Dragon's Lair
The "Dragonfang" (also known as "The Magic Sword" ) is a flaming magic sword that first appears in the final scene of Dragon's Lair, where it is only referred to as "the magic sword" by Princess Daphne. In most games and adaptations, it is the only weapon which can slay Singe the Dragon. The name "Dragonfang" is first mentioned in the first issue of the Dragon's Lair comics.
Appearances[]
Dragon's Lair[]
After Dirk the Daring reaches Singe’s lair, the imprisoned Princess Daphne tells him to use the magic sword to slay the dragon. Dirk must avoid Singe’s attacks, pull the sword from the crystal, and ultimately use the weapon to pierce the Singe’s scaly belly.
Dragon's Lair (TV series)[]
Although Dirk uses a variety of swords throughout he series, he never uses any blade comparable to the Magic Sword seen in the original arcade game, since that version of Cinge is a recurring character. In Cinge’s treasure room, a sword inside a magical crystal is used by the dragon and his minions to spy upon other parts of Ethelred’s kingdom.
Dragon's Lair comics[]
The royal wizard’s apprentice Halvern tells Dirk and Leraene that Singe is not an ordinary dragon and cannot be killed by conventional weapons (being one of the Elder Dragons), but he may only be slain by the Dragonfang, which is kept inside dragon amber in his castle treasure room. Once Dirk enters Singe’s Lair, he immediately recognizes the sword as Dragonfang. After being rescued by Dirk, Daphne briefly wields the sword to intimidate the liberated maidens of Singe’s Harem from flocking to the heroic knight.
Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair[]
In Dragon's Lair 3D, it is revealed that the sword can only be unsheathed from the magic crystal by a warrior with great courage, wit and no evil intentions, as shown when Hollow tried to pull the sword out, to no avail.
Trivia[]
- Marvel Books released a Dragon's Lair coloring book titled The Magic Sword with story by Dwight Jon Zimmerman and art by Warren Kremer. The Magic Sword also features prominently in another activity book in the series Dirk the Daring Battles the Black Knight, but in both books, the ornate design of the sword hilt varies from page-to-page.
- The way the sword is held inside a jewel is a possible reference to The Sword in the Stone, a film that Don Bluth worked on during his employment with The Walt Disney Studios.
- The Magic Sword does not appear in Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp although it may have been left behind in the treasure room, which Dirk revisits and sees Singe’s skeletal remains.
- Drangonfang is featured as the #2 card in Cardsmiths' first wave of Dragon's Lair trading cards, with the back of the card noting "Daphne knows that the metaphorical key to her freedom is the magic sword Dragonfang. It is the one thing that can kill Singe and allow Dirk to retrieve the actual key to release Daphne from her prison bubble."[1]
