Franky, Joe & Dirk: On The Tiles (title rendered in-game as Franky, Joe & Dirk... on the Tiles) is a sliding puzzle game released exclusively in Europe for the Game Boy in 1993. It features characters from three game franchises previously developed by Elite Systems games: Franky from Dr. Franken, Joe from Joe and Mac and Dirk the Daring from Dragon's Lair. The game follows Elite Systems' 1991 release of Dragon's Lair: The Legend.

Introduction[]

"Ever had that mixed up, crazy feeling? . . . Well pick up your Game Boy and prepare yourself for the most mind-blowingly addictive puzzle game ever! Mixed up pictures, mad professors, ticking time bombs, bonus slabs and bobby traps are just some of the crazy features lurking along the way, as you try to complete over 30 different jumbled pictures. With 4 levels of difficulty and only a limited amount of time in which to complete each screen, you'll definitely need your wits about you. From total beginners to total experts, your life may never be quite as sane again!"[1]

Gameplay[]

The player is presented with a picture based on one of the above mentioned game franchises which is scrambled at the start of a game. The object of the game is to move the shuffled tiles back to their original positions, putting the picture back together. Points are accumulated for every second the player remains in the game. Points are also awarded for the amount of time remaining when the player completes the level by rebuilding the picture. The more time remaining, the more points awarded with substantial bonuses awarded by completing pictures in only a few moves.

Adding variety and challenge are the addition special icons that appear on the tiles. The Booby Traps and Pit Falls should be avoided while rebuilding each picture and include the Time Bomb (which will detonate and end the game unless the tile underneath it is moved), Flashing Arrows (moving the tile underneath it will shuffle some of the remaining tiles), Padlock & Key (appearing on two different tiles to slow down the player by having the Padlock immobilize a tile until moving the tile underneath the Key), Screws (which permanently fix tiles in place), and the Mad Professor, who appears to pick up tiles and throw them around. Countering the traps are Game Features which are also activated when the tiles upon which they sit are moved. The features include Clocks which boost the timer, Weights that will crush the Mad Professor and prevent him from causing havoc if one is collected before he appears, five 'BONUS' Letters which appear at random and award 2000 points if the word is spelled, and rare Gyroscope icons which complete the level automatically.

There are two different game types: "Normal Game" and "Against the Clock." Both modes are timed but the latter is played without any of the special items. There are also four different difficulty levels that can be chosen before a game, with high levels reducing the time given to complete each picture.

Featured Dragon's Lair content includes images of Dirk, Princess Daphne, Singe the Dragon, the Giddy Goons, the striped snake, and The Castle.
