The Grumlets are enemies that first appeared in the original Space Ace arcade game. In the game’s final stage, several Grumlets overwhelm Dexter and carry away Kimberly, restraining her on a circular pad that they slowly lower into a melting vat as Borf attempts to finish off Dexter with the Infanto Ray.
After Dexter energizes into Ace, some of the Grumlets try to aid Borf by swarming the hero. Through deft movements, Ace is able to trick Borf into firing the Infanto Ray upon the Grumlets, neutralizing their threat to him by turning them into babies.
Other Appearances[]
The Grumlets appear in the Ruby-Spears animated series, which are sometimes referred to be Borf as simply "guards."
At the beginning of Space Ace II: Borf's Revenge, a Video Guard immediately seizes the Baby Borf to restore him to normal with the Infanto Ray, while the remaining adult Grumlets once again abduct Kimberly.
Trivia[]
- Magicom Promotional Kits for the arcade game described a Grumlet as “a goblin-like soldier who guards Borf's laboratory.”[1]
- Grumlets appear on the box cover art for ReadySoft’s home computer version of Space Ace.
- The instruction manual for Space Ace II: Borf's Revenge refers to them as "Goons."[2]
- In Don Bluth's presentation pitch for Dragon's Lair: The Movie, Mordroc was given a diminutive minion named Grum, perhaps inspired by the Grumlets.
