The Lava Men are villainous characters exclusive to the Ruby-Spears Dragon's Lair animated series, who serve as loyal minions of Urisk in the episode "Song of the Wind Chimes." Together with their master, the Fire Creatures, and the Dust Devils, they live inside a volcano (called "Mount Volmar") located at the base of picturesque village of Tragenna in the Southern Hills. The creatures appear as large yellow blob-like beings with distorted facial features and limbs that allow they to walk or grab, similar to the Mudmen.

After Urisk sends Lisrath and his Bogles to steal Tragenna's magical golden wind chimes and imprison the villagers, the Lava Men, Fire Creatures, and Dust Devils serve as deterrents against anyone who tries to enter the village or Mount Volmar. Outside Tragenna, hordes of the enemy creatures surround Princess Daphne as she searches for underground water with a magical divining rod gifted from Scisorek, but the princess uses the rod to douse the creatures in water, causing them to evaporate. The Lava Men return to trouble the heroes inside the deserted village, but Dirk the Daring discovers an underground spring which extinguishes the creatures. Inside the volcano, the creatures try to protect Urisk from Dirk's advance, but the heroes empty a large water container to neutralize the enemies.

Abilities[]

The Lava Men thrive in high temperature environments and reside naturally in volcanic lava. They appear to emit immense heat, with a flaming aura emanating from their bodies. They are shown to be capable of completely incinerating a person, as seen in one possible outcome of Dirk's decision making in which a group of Lava Men surround him and leave only his sword and helmet behind.

Trivia[]

  • The fourth issue of the comic book series prominently features the Mud Men as enemies Dirk must evade, but their portrayal has some similarities to the Lava Men. According to Dirk, these Mud Men reside amongst the “boiling lava, gouts of fire, and geysers of goo” of the “Sands of Fire”, which Dirk decides to cross as a shortcut to The Castle.
