Mordread is the evil sister of Mordroc and, somehow, a metallic Time Machine. She debuted as the main antagonist of Dragon's Lair III: The Curse of Mordread, her only official appearance to date.

Appearance and Abilities[]

As many scenes of that game are recycled from Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp, Mordread's appearance is based on Mordroc's. Being his sister, Mordread is depicted as an obese, maniacal sorcerer with grey skin, warts on her nose and hands and large breasts all covered by a long brown and black cloak. She also has long white hair and at least four teeth in her mouth.

Much like her brother, Mordread is a powerful sorcerer that is capable of casting dark magic. She can teleport, summon barriers, shoot lightning, create monsters, duplicate objects such as Dirk's Time Machine and seal people and items away in the large orb of her magical staff.

Dragon's Lair III: The Curse of Mordread[]

When she learns that her brother was defeated by Dirk, she vows revenge and captures Dirk's household (with Princess Daphne inside) in an orb with future plans to trap her forever in the Vortex of Eternity. Mordread then escapes onto Dirk's Time Machine with him hot on her heels. To free herself from Dirk, Mordread duplicates the machine, leaving the knight on one and escaping into Wonderland on the other. She is later found battling Dirk in Beethoven's studio before escaping yet again to Blackbeard's pirate ship, where the two would make their way down and back up the mast, then teleporting to the castle of Father Time for their final encounter.

Mordread’s demise

Mordread hides behind the throne of Father Time as he and Baby New Year fire bolts of lightning at Dirk. Mordread plans to drop the magical orb containing daphne into the Vortex of Eternity beneath the throne, but Dirk grabs a golden plate, deflecting two time rays that strike Mordread. She momentarily transforms into a baby after being struck by the first, then quickly ages then turns to ash due to the effects of the second. Dirk leaps into action and grabs the magical orb before it falls into the Vortex of Eternity.

Trivia[]

  • Mordread is the only primary antagonist to never appear outside of her debut game.
  • In promotional artwork, including the game’s box, Mordread’s skin is green, but appears mostly grey in-game.
  • The Goon Witch in the Dragon's Lair comics bears a strong resemblance to Mordread.
