Puck the Elf is a magical character that appears in the Ruby-Spears Dragon's Lair animated series episode "The Mist of Wishes." A diminutive and mischievous creature, Puck uses his magic to initiate challenges for others which he considers to be fun games. He is able to mix together many magical potions (often with use of a cauldron) including sleeping power and the titular "Mist of Wishes" which will grant someone the power to wish for anything they want.

Prior to the events of "The Mist of Wishes" episode, Puck was captured by Cinge and imprisoned in the Bubble of Helotry. Cinge threatened the captive Puck to give him the power to wish for anything, but the magical ritual was interrupted by Dirk the Daring and Sir Hubert Blunt, who had journeyed into Cinge's Castle to acquire the Magic Sword. Puck took the opportunity to blow the cauldron's magical fog away from Cinge and onto Sir Blunt. Puck encouraged the confused knight to wish for something to save them from the dragon. In turn, Blunt wished for Cinge to become as small as a canary, resulting in the dragon's capture inside a bottle. As Dirk frees Puck from Cinge's chains, the elf tells Dirk that he is going to become "a player in my little game" but promises to give the knight some help in the gift of a magic ring and a riddle.

After Blunt becomes prideful and corrupted by his own power and accomplishments, Cinge manipulates him into wishing himself to become king, reducing King Ethelred and Princess Daphne to his personal servants. Thanks to Puck's ring, Dirk is able to recognize the changes Blunt's wishes have wrought upon the kingdom, and the knight takes Daphne and Timothy on a quest to find Puck. The heroes encounter Puck in the forest playfully riding a large dragonfly, and Puck explains he can take away Blunt's power by mixing up a new Mist for Blunt to breathe again. Puck helps the heroes infiltrate the king's castle from the underground caverns, putting some giant rats to sleep by blowing his sleeping powder out of a clear pipe. Puck stores the magical Mist in a fireplace bellow, which is discharged with the heroes reach Blunt at the top of the castle. Having undone all of Blunt's wishes, Puck grabs a Pugil Stick and helps Dirk force Cinge into retreat. As Puck bids the heroes farewell, he remarks that the experience was fun as considers what sort of "game" he might be able to play next.

Trivia[]

  • Puck is likely inspired by the tree fairies of English and Celtic mythology or, more specifically, the character of the same name from William Shakespeare's play “A Midsummer Night's Dream,” who delights in pranks.
