The Sandman is a character that appears in the Ruby-Spears Dragon's Lair animated series episode "The Pool of Youth." Described by Gelda as a magical creature who lives by Lake Ramma and made out of magic sand that can counteract the powers of the Pool of Youth, the Sandman proves essential to defeating the evil witch Biralla after she has her youth restored by the Pool, which greatly increases her power. Gelda and Timothy journey to the Sandman's home, a large sandcastle near the lake, and request his help against Biralla. The Sandman initially dismisses the request on account of being too old and slow to chase after the witch, but accepts the invitation when Timothy offers to carry him in a bag. The Sandman is able to magically disintegrate himself into granular sand to fit easily inside the bag. After reaching the Pool of Youth, Timothy releases the Sandman, who is able to restore Dirk the Daring, Princess Daphne, and Bertram to their proper ages by reversing the Pool's effect on them. As a restored Dirk battles the youthful Biralla, the Sandman is also able to reverse the Pool's effect on Biralla, reverting her to an old hag and diminishing her power enough for Dirk to defeat her.
