Sonya is a character who appears exclusively in Don Bluth's multi-episode "Dragon's Lair: Reign of Terror" comic which featured in issues of Don Bluth's Toon Talk magazine published between 2000-2001, likely intended as a tie-in to Bluth's work on the script for a Dragon's Lair feature film. Sonya is part of Princess Daphne‘s traveling troupe of stage performers who mock the evil king Vraxxis.
Appearance and Personality[]
Sonya is portrayed as a tall and extremely skinny woman with some comical features like a large nose, big feet, and knobby knees. She has long hair with extends down to her waist. Sonya is described as an incomparable “Puppeteer Extraordinaire” who is responsible for elaborate special effects, using her entire body to make the performance exceptional. When left alone she sometimes speaks to her puppets while admitting she hopes to find a man as a romantic partner.[1]
Narrative Role[]
Sonya assists Daphne change outfits between acts of their performance. After completing the show, Sonya pleads with Daphne to wait on Sir Dwayne to finish his fire eating act, as instructed. Daphne, however, mounts her horse and rides off, requesting Sonya to inform Dwayne to meet her at the bridge. Sonya passes the message along to Dwayne, who declines to talk and rushes off to meet Daphne. Left alone, Sonya talks to her puppets and props, assuring herself that she possesses "the patience of a saint" and hope it lasts "until she finds a man."
