Sybilla is a villainous character who appears exclusively in the Dragon's Lair TV series episode "The Girl from Crow's Wood."

Known as "The Bird Woman", she sought to take control of the village of Crow's Wood as a haven for herself and her evil Winged Creatures. Using her red hypnotic gaze, she could enchant anything or anyone on two legs. She was further empowered by the Griffin's Stone, which she wielded at the tip of her staff. She was thwarted by Crow's Wood's wise old wizard with powers equal to her own. The wizard wrestled the stone away from her and returned it to the Griffin, then used his last bit of energy to banish Sybilla to a stone fortress, as she swore revenge.

Learning from her pet raven (whose magic directly controls the other winged creatures) that Princess Daphne and Dirk the Daring visited Crow's Wood to celebrate the festival commemorating Sybilla's defeat, she planned to lure the peasant girl Bronwen (a look-alike of Daphne) to help her escape. Using both her red gaze and an enchanted brooch, Sybilla hypnotizes Bronwen into impersonating Daphne and manipulating Dirk into stealing the Griffin's Stone, the only thing that would permit her to break free from her fortress prison. She sends her winged creatures to abduct Daphne's horse Rosemary, which prompts the hypnotized Bronwen to lead Dirk and Timothy to the Griffin's Stone and then to the fortress, under the ruse of a rescue mission.

After reattached the Griffin's Stone to her staff, Sybilla grows larger in size, flies out of the fortress, and returns to Crow's Wood. Dirk is able to defeat her by using a blind and instructing Bertram to nudge him toward the villainess. Dirk destroys the Griffin Stone with a well-placed swing from his sword, causing Sybilla to disintegrate.

Trivia[]

  • The character’s name may be inspired by Arthurian legend and Italian folklore of a mythical medieval queen or princess who is frequently portrayed as a fairy or an enchantress, alternatively referred to as Sebile, Sedile, Sebille, Sibilla, Sibyl, or Sybilla.
  • Sybilla’s enslavement of Bronwen may be inspired by Welsh mythology and medieval literature in which the tragic figure of “Branwen” suffers mistreatment, to be later worshipped as the goddess of the moon and love and associated with birds.
