"Hasten, lad, hurry, we'll get her back! Defeat the foul wizard, my brother in black."
—Time Machine, Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp

The sentient Time Machine is Mordroc's brother and the tritagonist of Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp and Dragon's Lair III: The Curse of Mordread. In both games, he helps Dirk save Daphne from his evil magical siblings, although the backstory of how he became a time machine is never elaborated upon. He is able to speak audibly, often in rhyme, and has sensory awareness of stage environments.

Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp[]

Dirk stumbled upon the Machine among the treasure hoard in Singe's old lair in the Castle, with Mordroc's brother appearing to have some form of temporal-based precognition, as he immediately recognized Dirk and addressed him by name. He could also trace his sorcerer brother's place in the timestream and follow him. He seems require water to activate, as Dirk first had to fetch him some in order to warp out of the treasure room. He appeared to be in some slight state of disrepair, as he required Dirk to utilize his sword as a makeshift control rod.

Dragon's Lair III: The Curse of Mordread[]

The Time Machine helps Dirk rescue Daphne from Mordread, the evil sister of Mordroc (and presumably his own sister as well). At the beginning of the game, Mordread attempts to steal the Time Machine—which is parked near Dirk's cottage—along with Dirk’s family, but after Dirk’s intervention, she makes a duplicate time machine for herself. While Dirk continues to use his sword to control the original machine, Mordread uses her orbed magical staff as a makeshift control lever for the duplicated machine. After the death of Mordread, Dirk and his Time Machine rescue Daphne and bring their house safely home to its original location, ending the game.

Abandoned Projects[]

According to surviving storyboard drawings created for the Attract Mode of a cancelled Dragon's Lair IV project, Dirk might have made use of the Time Machine's services (perhaps with an upgraded navigation panel) in another mission to rescue Daphne from the magical spell of yet another dark wizard (possibly even a resurrected Mordroc).[1]

Trivia[]

  • A physical model of the Time Machine was constructed for animation reference.[2]
  • The Time Machine is featured in Cardsmiths' Dragon's Lair trading card series as card #8 ("TIME FOR A RIDE"), with the description: "You built a Time Machine... out of Mordroc's brother? Well, not exactly, but Mordroc's brother is indeed a time machine, powered by water, and steered by Dirk's blade. It's Dirk's way to the past and the future."[3] The Time Machine is again referenced on card #45 ("CRASH LANDING") with the description: “In an amazing display of bad parenting, Dirk and Daphne let their brood play with the crashed time machine. But at least they're all finally free.”[4]
